Leptospirosis is down, but not out
  • After dairy herd vaccination began in 1979, leptospirosis cases dropped from 667 to 106 by 1991.
  • However, the infection rate is back up to 200 cases every year, and appears to be rising.
  • Today, New Zealand has one of the highest rates of leptospirosis in the world.
The message is clear - vaccination alone is not enough to stamp out leptospirosis.

Leptosure risk management programme for leptospirosis on dairy farms was developed:

  • To prevent people working on dairy farms from contracting the disease and;
  • To assist people who have responsibility for the workplace to comply with OSH requirements.

Implemented correctly, the Leptosure programme will reduce the risk to herd owners, their families and workers of contracting leptospirosis. Leptosure is certified by veterinarians and endorsed by the Occupational Safety and Health Service of the Department of Labour. It registers protected properties in the national Livestock Improvement (LIC) database, provides an on farm certificate and gate plate and provides a total risk management plan (including vaccination program).
